Yasira Shien from The Outside trilogy! She’s explicitly plural in the sense that the books use the word “plural” and explain plurality, both traumagenic and endogenic. Yasira gets her consciousness fractured by channeling cosmic horror-type energy and becomes plural.
So much of those books are just *chef’s kiss*. They simultaneously are able to show plurality as being difficult/disabling and don’t show it as pure suffering. They explain what’s going on inside her head in terms that are extremely relatable as a plural. And she gets an absolutely adorable plural coming-out scene to her girlfriend.
Add that to the fact that the entire concept of the book is an allegory for Madness/neurodivergence and most of the main characters are ND in some way (Yasira is also autistic). And it manages to incorporate all this meaningful symbolism while still being an amazing sci-fi/cosmic horror story.
Sorry, I just really like gushing about The Outside.

Do You Know This (canon) Autistic Character?
Tumblr media
Fanart credit - layaroseart - do not reblog/repost without the credit, thank you.
Propaganda:
Mentioned in canon text (including book summary) and expresses autistic traits throughout the story (ex, trouble with social norms, sensory issues, meltdowns, black-and-white thinking, etc).

Finished reading The Outside by Ada Hoffmann and god I love the worldbuilding so bad. What people do to be priests for the machine gods? SELLSOULS? ANGELS???? Oh this is so cool. The exposition is also balanced really well between telling and showing- you get enough info to have a basis you can build off of when new things are shown- the moment when Ev says she prayed and Yasira says that it’s impossible because she Doesn’t Have The Circuitry For It- AAAAAA??? THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE? Like it’s not a twist so much as it is another fact of the world but it felt like a puzzle piece clicking in, it fits so perfectly into what we know of the world and it’s such an interesting take on what prayer would look like in this kind of world

This is a short story by Steven Moffat that was posted on the Doctor Who official website in 2020. I feel as a neurodivergent person there are things to unpack here. My main issue with the story is that the neurodivergent main character (a DID system named David) is portrayed as murderous. And it's only the Doctor's influence (a so-called superior being) that stops him from burning down his orphanage. The Doctor in the story pokes fun at David throughout and is openly hostile to him at one point. I personally don't see the Doctor acting like this to anyone except obstructive bureaucrats, bigots and at times military personnel. There is however a moment when the Doctor empathises with David when she describes the cruelty and abuse he has been through because of his neurodiversity. I should note at this point that I am not a DID system (I'm autistic and have psychosis). I just find this ND character's portrayal somewhat jarring as he is pretty much puppetmastered by the Doctor into doing what she wants. (In fairness what the Doctor wants is to stop David burning down the orphanage) I find the ending sinister as the Doctor says "It won't be easy. None of it will be easy, ever. But I'll always be there." As well as the part where she says "A few of my hits (referring to David knowing the Doctor's nicknames). I'm glad you've been paying attention." These two exchanges put me in mind of Ada Hoffmann's novelette Fairest Of All. In which two autistic characters are routinely demeaned and insulted by two faerie monarchs. Who each demand that the autistic characters address them as "Fairest of all". I feel like this is a similar power imbalance that we see in Terror of the Umpty Ums. In which a person of greater intellectual power (the Doctor) strong arms (albeit gently) someone of ostensibly lesser intellectual power who is already stigmatised for being neurodivergent. Steven Moffat is a very great writer, don't get me wrong. But this particular offering of his has left a bad taste in my mouth. Moffat's intentions were possibly good (as the Doctor says at one point "I'm in your head now, keeping you right. Never cruel. Never cowardly. Always the Doctor.") I just can't help but be a little uneasy with how neurodivergence is handled here. If anyone has any comments I would love to hear them. Thanks a lot all.

hey!! i saw your post about female sci fi authors. could you recommend some books? :D
oh, absolutely! just a couple of my favourites off the top of my head:
ancillary justice by ann leckie (a complex political space opera following a warship AI who's lost (almost) everything, and what she's willing to do for revenge)
all systems red by martha wells (a fun and addictive novella about a security robot who'd rather watch TV than do its job)
on the origin of species and other stories by kim bo-young (collection of wildly imaginative speculative fiction short stories unlike anything i've read; her other collection, i'm waiting for you: and other stories is also very good)
dawn by octavia e. butler (thought-provoking and disturbing first contact story about a woman who is saved from a dying earth by seemingly benevolent aliens - but their help comes at a price)
the left hand of darkness by ursula k. le guin (slow and thoughtful novel about a human ambassador to a wintery planet whose inhabitants have no fixed sex or gender roles, trying to navigate its culture and politics)
the fortunate fall by cameron reed (heartwrenching cyberpunk story about a lesbian news reporter in a dystopian regime who uncovers more than she bargained for)
(+this more extensive list i made a while back where someone asked for scifi about women might also be of interest to you! most of it just so happens to be by women - i think the only exceptions are max gladstone, rob hart, sarah gailey and ada hoffmann)

Ada Hoffmann @xasymptote
( If you are autistic and you have been acting more autistic lately-like by focusing on your special interests even more than usual, stimming for hours, losing speech, etc - this is a normal autistic response to traumatic times and you are valid and ok, fren. <3 )

I also love thinking up different first names for my (female) Io. I will freely admit my frame of reference is very Western, so limited.
Do you go the Greek mythology route (Athena, sprung full-formed from the head of Zeus? Cassandra, the doomed seer? Galatea, the statue that was so loved by its creator that it became human?)?
An ode to classic android/cyborgs of sci fi (Maria from Metropolis or Pris/Zhora/Raechel from Blade Runner? Olympia, the wind-up doll everyone thought was real from the stories of ETA Hoffmann)?
What about famous AIs (Eliza, the real chatbot from the 60s that fooled people into thinking it was real, who also has the bonus of sharing a name with Eliza from My Fair Lady, which is possibly loosely based off the Galatea myth although i recently read an Australian story that I'm pretty sure is a more direct inspiration?)?
General women's names with significance (Eve, the mythical first woman? Ada after Ada Lovelace who did very early work on proto-computers?)
I'm currently using Pandora - the first woman in Greek myth, molded from earth, and made as a punishment for humans after they received the gift of fire, and the one who released all the ills of humanity into the world. Idk if it totally works, but I like it well enough. I always think of them as Io first.
anyways, just nerding out. Great story, one of my faves.
all of these are genuinely perfect you have no idea

Finished "The Infinite" by Ada Hoffmann, the final book in The Outside trilogy.
Moral of the story: autistic people can kill gods.
For real tho, I really enjoyed these books! The fantasy inspired sci-fi setting with soul eating AI gods and cyborg angels is really unique and I liked how the entire system is written. I also liked the portrayal of the Outside not as a corporeal eldrich being but as a changing force.
The story is great too, of being betrayed by the system and seeing it for what it really is, and how the system built on the previous, failed one still carries the same vices. You know what I mean. I'm a bit too hungry and tired flr coherent thoughts on this.
I also like how neurodivergence is linked to the Outside and "heresy". Also too hazy to articulate that, sorry.
Anyway. Highly recommend if you like space operas.
